Klean Kanteen Launches Safe, Durable Klean Coat™ Finish and New Colors for 2018 Collection

CHICO, Calif. (July 25, 2017) – As part of a company commitment to environmental impact reductionresponsibility and materials safety, Klean Kanteen is proud to unveil Klean Coat™, a chip-resistant, durable powder coat finish developed with the support of an advanced chemical hazard assessment tool known as GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals (GreenScreen®). Klean’s 2018 collection features a vibrant new palette of Klean Coat colors inspired by nature and the world we live in.

The family-owned company introduced the first stainless-steel, BPA-free, reusable bottle in 2004 as a safe, nontoxic durable alternative to single-use, plastic water bottles. Today, with the introduction of Klean Coat, Klean Kanteen continues to innovate using a the Klean Design philosophy. With a cradle to grave approach, end of life considerations and rigorous environmental and socially responsible design and manufacturing processes, environmental performance is core to company operations, rather than aspirational.

Danielle Cresswell, Sustainability Manager, commented, “Since day one, we’ve always taken our impact on the environment into consideration in everything we do as a business Klean’s interest in connections between business and the environment drives our thinking and our practice. Klean Coat is a great example. The old original finish on our our Kanteens was workingworked well, but the over time we noticed the rough and tumble life ourthese bottles leadive would meancould diminish the integrity of the coating and some folks started replacing them after only a few years of useresult in premature replacement. This didn’t sit well with us; the environmental demand to make a Kanteen is not excessive but also not insignificant, especially when considering annual production volumes. More frequent replacement means more Kanteens being produced than necessary to displace a lifetime of single-use plastic. To address this we are moving to powder coating, a known durable surface coating. We went a step further by going beyond regulatory compliance as a the measure of safety for our new finish. . Klean Coat is not only chip-resistant and durable; the formula, but the formula has been thoroughly examinedrigorously assessed for hazards to human and environmental health using the an advanced chemical hazard assessment tool known as GreenScreen chemical hazard assessment tool. The end result is a beautiful, durable finish formulated with the intention of creating safer optionsa safer chemistry for people and the planet. For us, that That’is something to celebrate.”

Developed by the non-profit Clean Production Action, the science-based chemical hazard assessment methodology known as GreenScreen allows manufacturers to identify chemicals of high concern and make decisions to replace them with safer alternatives in an effort to move towards safer chemistry in the final product. Klean Kanteen utilized GreenScreen in its material qualification process for Klean Coat as a way to rigorously examine all of the chemicals proposed for use in their new finish and ultimately objectively inform and drive selection of safer options while avoiding chemicals of high concern in the final product.

“We remain are more committed than ever to measuring what matters most and reducing our impact on the environment”, said Jim Osgood, Klean Kanteen President and CEO. “In the years ahead, we hope that Klean’s work with GreenScreen will encourage other manufacturers to make the selection of product materials in the interest of human and environmental health a standard operating procedure.”
