La Sportiva Apparel Joins 1% For the Planet
(Ziano Di Fiemme, Italy & Boulder, Colo.) – La Sportiva, producers of the world’s finest mountain products since 1928, today announces its membership in 1% for the Planet. By donating 1% of apparel sales revenue globally to approved environmentally-focused non-profit partners, La Sportiva demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and concern for the environment, on which the outdoor industry depends.
“It is a great achievement for our company,” says Lorenzo Delladio, President and CEO of La Sportiva. “We have always paid attention to the environment in which we operate as demonstrated by the ISO environmental certifications, the continuous reduction of CO2 emissions from our production plant in the Dolomites, our Bluesign certification, collaborations with environmental organizations, and the recycling of processing waste from our production processes. 1% for the Planet certifies that we are helping to protect the environment in which we live, and that we are working with other member companies to address global warming, the most significant threat of our times.”
La Sportiva currently produces certain footwear models using recycled materials and utilizes as many environmentally friendly processes as possible both at its main production facility in Ziano Di Fiemme, Italy and at partner facilities around the world. The 1% for the Planet partnership is a natural fit for the La Sportiva apparel category due to the brand’s ongoing use of organic cotton, PFC-free coatings, and Bluesign-approved textiles and garments in the production of its apparel product line. The brand is committed to using sustainable materials and processes whenever possible and has increased organic and recycled textiles in the apparel collection every year since it launched in 2012.
For Fall 2019 specifically, the Zeal JKT, Inversion Primaloft Vest, Meridian Primaloft JKT, Phase Down JKT all utilize recycled materials. It is no coincidence that there are many items that use Primaloft® Silver Active Eco Insulation, which is also created using fibers obtained entirely from the recycling of plastic products. Additionally, base layers use Polygiene® Treatment, an odor-resistant, anti-bacterial treatment that allows user to wear garments longer, therefore reducing the frequency of washing.
The recipients of La Sportiva's non-profit contributions include the European Outdoor Conservation Association, Conservation Alliance, Access Fund, Appalachian Trail Conservancy and others. Notably, La Sportiva regularly donate functional footwear with minor defects to humanitarian causes, thereby keeping those products out of the waste stream. La Sportiva North America also commits staffing and labor for local conservation projects and stewardship of its local bouldering area, Flagstaff Mountain.
