Hobie Announces New Products and a Collaboration with Reyn Spooner at Surf Expo 2018
OCEANSIDE, Calif. (Jan. 25, 2017) – Hobie, a leading manufacturer of premium kayaks and watersport products, announces several new products and a collaboration with lifestyle/aloha brand Reyn Spooner at Surf Expo 2018. New products include ten Hobie Polarized active and lifestyle frames, the Corky Carroll Mini Model Surfboard, the Super Surfer Skateboard, and a line of collaborative surfboards with Reyn Spooner.
Hobie/Reyn Spooner Surfboard Collaboration:
The two iconic brands, both born in the 1950’s, unite to create a line of classic and retro-inspired surfboards. “It’s a really exciting collaboration for us to look through Reyn Spooner archival prints and combine them with our handcrafted surfboards,” says Mark Johnson, Director of Surfboard Design at Hobie. All of the boards, ranging from 60’s inspired longboards to 70’s inspired retro twin fins and eggs, couple authentic Reyn Spooner cloth inlays with deep and contrasting resin tints. The result is a collection of boards that will turn heads at the beach or on the wall as authentic, handmade art.
Hobie Polarized 2018:
Hobie Polarized sunglasses are integral to connecting sports enthusiasts to the water, providing a better kind of vision: clearer, sharper, and more precise. In 2018, Hobie Polarized launches over 10 new active and lifestyle frames, continuing to offer the best polarized sunglasses for under $100. Styles include innovative features such as borosilicate glass, the popular Sightmaster lens tint, and dual-sided protective Hydro-360 coatings.
Corky Carroll Mini Model:
Hobie Surfboards is stoked to bring back the Corky Carroll Mini Model Surfboard, originally introduced in 1967 by shaping legends Terry Martin and Mickey Munoz. The Mini Model helped propel Corky into surfing history as one of the greatest competitors of “California’s Golden Age,” and is synonymous with the evolution of the modern surfing industry.
“I had a huge advantage in competition during 1967, as the only guy riding boards well under 9 feet, enabling me to win almost every event that year, including the International Pro Championship in Santa Cruz, U.S. Championship at Huntington Beach, and International Big Wave Championship in Peru,” says Corky.
Corky’s flashy yet functional surfing style, along with his sharp wit and infectious charisma, landed him surfing’s inaugural paid endorsement with Hobie. As the first professional surfer, he was the US Men’s champ in 1966, 1967, and 1969, and Overall Champion from 1966 through 1970. He won the Surfer Poll Award as the best surfer in the world in 1968, and in 1996 was inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame.
Super Surfer Skateboard
Hobie reintroduces the Original Hobie Super Surfer from 1965. The hand-crafted Super Surfer is built using the highest quality materials; from the solid mahogany and maple wood laminated deck to the 100% urethrane replica wheels and steel trucks. Care and quality workmanship recreate this amazing piece of Hobie skateboard history.
The Super Surfer was the first skateboard to connect surfing and skateboarding. The skateboard’s mahogany and maple wood mirrored one of Hobie’s most popular surfboards of the 1960’s— The Hobie Classic. The aesthetic connection created the surf/skate synthesis, and skateboard maneuvers began mirroring the style and flow of surfing. Hobie and the Super Surfer led the way in skateboarding in the 1960’s.
