CHICO, Calif. (Feb.1, 2018) – Honoring a company commitment to environmental responsibility and material safety, Klean Kanteen is proud to unveil Klean Coat™, a chip-resistant, four-times more durable powder coat finish, across its entire product line.
The family-owned company introduced the first stainless-steel, BPA-free reusable bottle in 2004 as a safe, durable alternative to single-use, plastic water bottles. Today, with the introduction of Klean Coat™, Klean Kanteen continues to innovate using Klean Design philosophy. With a holistic view of the product life cycle, including end of life considerations, Klean is constantly implementing rigorous environmentally and socially responsible design and manufacturing processes.
The most significant way Klean can reduce its own environmental impact is by producing products that last. Four times more durable than the previous finish, Klean Coat™ is ready for a lifetime of use and adventures.
“Klean’s interest in connections between business and the environment drives our thinking and our practice,” said Danielle Cresswell, Sustainability Manager at Klean Kanteen. “Klean Coat™ is a great example. The original finish on our Kanteens worked well, but over time we noticed the rough and tumble life our bottles lead could diminish the integrity of the coating and result in premature replacement. This didn’t sit well with us; the environmental demand to make a Kanteen is not excessive but also not insignificant, especially when considering annual production volumes. More frequent replacement means more Kanteens being produced than necessary to displace a lifetime of single-use plastic. To address this we are moving to powder coating, a known durable surface coating. Klean Coat is not only chip-resistant and durable, but has been rigorously tested for environmental hazards in the ingredients. The end result is a beautiful, durable finish formulated with a safer chemistry for people and the planet. That’s something to celebrate.”
Going beyond typical standards for human and environmental safety, Klean Kanteen developed Klean Coat™ using an advanced chemical hazard assessment tool known as GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals to remove high risk ingredients from the formula. Klean’s 2018 collection features a vibrant new palette of Klean Coat colors inspired by nature and the world we live in.
“We are more committed than ever to measuring what matters most and reducing our impact on the environment”, said Jim Osgood, Klean Kanteen President and CEO. “The launch of Klean Coat™ is an exciting step for our company and we’re hoping our work will inspire other manufacturers to make the selection of product materials in the interest of human and environmental health a standard operating procedure.”
