SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (July 27, 2017) — Hobie, a leading manufacturer of premium watersports products, launched the newly constructed Mega Mirage, a one-of-a-kind, 31-foot, ten person pedal powered inflatable watercraft at the 2017 Outdoor Retailer demo-day in Salt Lake City on Tuesday.

Hobie’s New Mega Mirage, a 31 foot, Ten Passenger, Pedal Powered Inflatable Board Debuts at Outdoor Retailer.

“We couldn’t be happier with how the Mega Mirage turned out, and the reaction from the crowd at Demo Day was awesome.” Says Doug Skidmore, Hobie’s President. “Hobie is all about excitement on the water, and we saw many smiles out there - it was a great way to show off the potential of the Mirage Drive and its capabilities.”

The newly built Mega Mirage turned heads at Jordanelle Reservoir as it tore across the water powered by ten independent peddlers using Hobie’s innovative MirageDrive 180 technology. The massive watercraft was specially built for brand promotion at the OR demo day event, and commanded the crowd’s attention at the reservoir beach.

“The Mega Mirage started as a fun idea, then we realized we could actually build it!” Says Jim Czarnowski, Vice President of Engineering. “After some initial concept work, we had a solid plan for building it using materials and parts from models we keep in stock. It took about a month and a half to build, and we only had the chance to get it on the water once before the show.”

The construction of the giant pedal-board is modeled off of Hobie’s wildly popular i11s inflatable. A drop stitch style hull allows for much higher inflation pressures, creating a remarkably rigid and high-performance platform that accepts Hobie’s MirageDrive 180 pedal drive mechanisms. This gives each passenger the ability to pedal at their own pace, also enabling the craft to travel in reverse. The craft was built solely for promotional purposes, but may open the door for innovation of other multi-passenger inflatables. See the new Hobie Mega Mirage in action on YouTube here.
